The Settings Hierarchy
Paimnt uses a hierarchy system for the till settings. This means that the same settings that can be set in the till software by going to ‘settings’ in the side bar can also be set in HQ at a location, site, and organisation level.
A till will use settings that have been configured directly for itself on a device level. If a particular setting has not been configured on that device, it will then check the location settings, then the site settings, then the organisation settings until it finds where the setting has been configured.
This allows you to configure common settings for your whole company, individual stores or venues within your company, or locations within those venues and all tills within those areas will use those settings, rather than having to configure every setting on every till individually.
Example
A company has 2 restaurants. Each restaurant has 2 tills. They want to set up the receipt printing for the devices.
- The owner wants both restaurants to use the same layout for their receipts, so they set up the template and the printing settings at an organisation level in the printing section.
- Each restaurant has a different business name, address, and phone number on their receipt, so they set the business details up at a site level.
- Each till has its own receipt printer with a different IP address for each printer, so the receipt printer address and type is set up at a device level.
If the owner wants to change the layout of the receipt in the future, they can change it once at the organisation level and all 4 tills will get the change.
If a 3rd till is added to one of the restaurants, it will get all the same print settings from the organisation and site levels and will need only the printer address and type set up for its own printer.
Hierarchy Levels and Inheriting Settings
The settings can be configured at 4 levels:
- Organisation
- Site
- Location
- Device.
If an option isn’t set at any of these levels, it will use the default programmed into the software.
Organisation settings are the highest level and will be used (inherited) in all lower levels by default. Settings at lower levels will override any settings inherited from higher levels. Options set at the device level are highest priority and can’t be overriden.

Each level of settings will show if it is inheriting the setting from a higher level in the hierarchy. If has been configured at the level you are currently inspecting, it will display ‘Remove Override’ . Click the ‘remove override’ text to clear the setting at the current level and use an inherited setting.
Example
This is the printing settings from the settings at the device level.

- The IP address of the printer in the location is the same for all tills in that location, so the print server host has been set at the location level and inherited to this device.
- The printer is using the default port used by most POS printers and so the printer server port hasn’t been changed at any level. This stays at the Paimnt default.
- All receipt printers used by the company are TM-T82II or equivalent, so this has been set at the organisation level and is inherited.
- The current till is an iMin devices and uses the inbuilt cash drawer port, so this has been set at the device level.
- All tills at the current venue should print a receipt automatically after every transaction, so this has been set at the site level and is inherited.
Device Settings in the HQ and the Till App
The device level setttings can be set in the HQ (site > devices > edit device > settings), or they can be set on the till itself (side menu > settings).
Changing an option in one place will change it on the other if the till is correctly syncing, although if changes are made on the till while the settings screen is already open in HQ, it will need refreshing.
If device settings are changed while the device is not able to sync from Nexus, the most recent change to an option (in HQ or the device) will be the final setting used once the device is synced again.
